We recommend the performance from ages 18 and up.

Hard-core Mozart. Calixto Bieito presents womankind as the object of male passions and desires, right up to the brutal dismemberment of the female body. And at the centre of this production we see the absurd love between the perpetrator and his victim – and Mozart’s music as an oasis of humanity. Bieto’s »scandalous« production »gripped people and divided them into haters and fans ... For some people it may be an experience that crosses the boundaries of taste, but for others it is a cleansing experience that cathartically touches on the wellspring of theatre, and which turns brutality into a ritual and gives it a higher aesthetic truth.« [Die Welt]

Konstanze and Blonde are in the power of Selim Bassa, who puts them to work for him. Osmin manages his palace for him and keeps a check on Pedrillo, who also works for the Pasha.
Selim Bassa has fallen in love with Konstanze, Osmin with Blonde.
Pedrillo, who also loves Blonde, wants to help the women, but sees no way of doing so till the appearance of Belmonte, Konstanze's lover.
Pedrillo and Belmonte hatch escape plans, but in order to carry them out they must first take on the two stronger men.
The Pasha and Osmin are not willing to give up the women. In their despair, they seek to assert their claim to the women by force. After a long battle, the power balance is re-structured.

Barrie Kosky uses a light touch in his production to follow the all-too human meanderings and confusions of Mozart’s characters.
