A co-production with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein
The magnificent magic of Baroque theatre on the stage of the Komische Oper Berlin. In this celebrated version by the Norwegian theatrical magician Stefan Herheim, under the musical direction of Baroque specialist Konrad Junghänel, Händel’s opera Xerxes becomes a feast for the eyes, ears and senses. With great opulence and immense attention to detail Herheim tells the story of the powerful Persian King Xerxes, who can move vast armies and yet remains powerless in love, as a humorous game with conventions of performance which is filled with the spirit of Händel’s era and yet establishes a bridge to the present day – “A theatrical miracle which proves that erudition and complexity of thought derived from historical awareness can heighten our capacity for enjoyment.” [FAZ]

Barrie Kosky uses a light touch in his production to follow the all-too human meanderings and confusions of Mozart’s characters.
Wehope our programme will arouse considerable interest, and as always we extend ahearty welcome to all visitors at the Komische Oper Berlin.
The month of May is always devoted to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
